The Palace on Wheels, India's first luxury and heritage train, was launched in 1982. It is a joint effort by Indian Railways and Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation. The concept of the Palace on Wheels was derived from the royal background of the coaches, which were originally meant to be the personal railway coaches of the erstwhile rulers of the princely states of Rajputana, Baroda, and the Nizam of Hyderabad. The train provides luxury cabins, regal charm, and impeccable service. Fine dining meets Indian hospitality. Prepare to immerse yourself in a bygone era of Indian royalty

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 : Embark Palace on Wheels at New Delhi

Welcome at Safdarjung Railway Station

The guests are given a ceremonial welcome at the Safdarjung Railway Station at 4:30 PM where they proceed with the check-in formalities. You will be treated like a Maharaja and Maharani (king and queen). Feel free to explore your new palace, and acquaint yourself with its various facilities. Relax with a welcome drink at the restaurant. At 6.30 PM the vibrantly decorated Palace on Wheels begins its eight-day odyssey cutting across the scenic landscapes and rich heritage of India. Dinner will served on board.

Day 2 : Jaipur - The Pink City of India

Hawa Mahal, Jaipur

The first stop of Palace on Wheels is Jaipur, one of the most well planned cities of the world of its time. This capital city of Rajasthan, popularly known as the Pink City, was founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, in 1727 A.D.To explore the city, an air-conditioned coach takes you to Albert Hall Museum, The foundation of Albert Hall was laid by the Prince of Wales, Albert Edward in 1876. A magnificent building built in Indo-Saracenic architectural style. have a photo stop at Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds, which is a remarkable five storied building along the main street of the old city in pink splendor with semi-octagonal and delicate honey-combed sandstone windows (visited from out side for photo stop). Visit the Jantar Mantar, the largest observatory built by the Sawai Jai Singh II, and then visit the City Palace, home of the erstwhile royal family. A jeep ride to the Amber fort followed by the lunch at a restaurant. Then you will be off to visit Amber Fort. See some more intricate handmade art pieces from local Jaipur artisans. The coach will take you back to Palace on Wheels; Dinner will be served on board.

Day 3 : Enchanting Day: Ranthambore's Wildlife and Chittorgarh's History

Ranthambore National Park

One can almost sense a life of the wilderness, as the Palace on Wheels arrives in Sawai Madhopur, a city named after its founder Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I. You will enjoy the game drive by shared open canter, this wildlife sanctuary is considered to be the country’s best for observing and photographing the activities of the tiger. The park, covering an area of 392sq Kms is home to more than 300 species of birds. The tiger, hyena, jackal and fox are among those constituting the carnivorous population here. After the game, a safari canter will take you back to Palace on Wheels for breakfast on board.Palace on Wheels entourage leaves for Chittorgarh. During the course of the journey, guests can have a leisure time at the bar; enjoy a few drinks and converse with fellow passengers over their inherent love for travel.Lunch will be served on board as we head for Chittorgarh, when one gets an opportunity to watch the colorful countryside passing by in the daylight.

Arrive Chittorgarh city of forts and castles of a bygone era that echoes the heroism and pride of the Rajput clan. The guests go for a quick exploration of the city, reveling in the various sightings the city has to offer & proceed for sightseeing, where we view the images of love and valour; scars of battles lost and won. Thrice-besieged, Chittorgarh Fort is all this and more, the victory tower and the tower of fame.Visit Chittorgarh fort, enjoy high tea at the fort. You will also have an opportunity to witness the sound and light show at the majestic Chittorgarh Fort.The coach will take you back to Palace on Wheels. Dinner will be served on board.

Overnight on board.The Palace on Wheels stays in Chittorgarh station until the late mid night before departing for Udaipur.

Day 4 : Welcome to The City of Lakes "Udaipur"

City Palace, Udaipur

Arrive Udaipur and your breakfast will be served on board. Udaipur city was founded by Maharana Udai Singh of Mewar, after the Sisodia dynasty was driven away by the Mughals. It’s set around a series of artificial lakes and is known for its lavish royal residences. Proceed for tour around the city’s historical garden – Saheliyon Ki Bari regarded as the most popular tourist space, a lotus pool and marble elephants followed by a visit to the City Palace - one of the architectural marvels of Rajasthan, located peacefully on the banks of Lake Pichola. The Palace has various towers, domes and arches, which add to the flavor of heritage site Lunch will be served at the hotel. The coach will take you back to Palace on Wheels. High Tea & Dinner will be served on board.The Palace on Wheels set on its journey cutting across Rajasthan and moving towards Jaisalmer Overnight on board.

Day 5 : Jaisalmer - The Golden City

Sand dunes, Jaisalmer

Breakfast is served on board. Palace on Wheels reaches the quaint city of Jaisalmer - a former medieval trading center and a princely state in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, in the heart of the Thar Desert. Known as the "Golden City," it's distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture . In the heart of the Thar Desert lies Jaisalmer, founded by Rawal Jaisal, in 1156A.D. Here the yellow sandstone fort is an imposing sight, towering magnificently over the city. Embark on a sightseeing tour to the serene spot of Gadisar Lake; Visit the Yellow Sandstone Jaisalmer Fort; discover the painstakingly latticed Havelis or mansions with their grand facades. The Nathmalji-ki-haveli was built by two Muslim jeweler brothers and not stone carvers on the order of the then prime minister, Patwon-ki-haveli known for its pretty paintings, intricate carvings and a grandiose style of architecture. The entire complex is not a single haveli but a cluster of five smaller beautiful havelis. Both are fine examples of the stone carver’s skill. The coach will take you back to Palace on Wheels for lunch. After lunch on board, proceed  for the sand dunes of Sam, enjoy Camel ride before sipping a refreshing High tea at sunset on the dunes. Later, enjoy the dinner and the cultural program at the hotel.  After dinner, coach will take you back to Palace on Wheels. Overnight on board. Palace on Wheels leaves Jaisalmer and heads towards Jodhpur.

Day 6 : Jodhpur - The Blue City

Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Palace on Wheels journeys into the Blue City of Jodhpur is famous for its exquisite handicrafts, folk dances, music and the brightly attired people. Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur is one of the best preserved private forts in India. Breakfast is served on board. Explore the city ringed by a high stone wall with seven gates and several bastions. This second largest city of Rajasthan, founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 A.D. is known for its rock-solid Mehrangarh Fort. The grand palaces within- Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana are impressive examples of architectural excellence. Near the fort complex lies the Jaswant Thada, and a group of royal cenotaphs made of white marble. Lunch will be served at the hotel.  Conclude the day the visit of the Umaid Bhawan Museum, located on Chittar Hill – the highest point of the city. The coach will take you back to Palace on Wheels and train proceeds to next destination Bharatpur. Dinner will be served on board. Overnight on board.

Day 7 : Wildlife and Wonders: Bharatpur to Agra

Taj Mahal, Agra

Next early morning, the Palace on Wheels arrives in Bharatpur, the capital of Maharaja Suraj Mal. Pay a visit to the world famous bird sanctuary, Keoladeo National Park, the nesting place of thousands of Egrets, Siberian Cranes, migratory Water Fowl and other species of birds. The coach will take you back to Palace on Wheels for breakfast on board and you will depart for Agra. Agra – Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, this city is home to some of the finest examples of Mughal Architecture including its pinnacle Taj Mahal. Agra served as the capital of the Mughal Empire until Shahjahan shifted it to Delhi. Arrive Agra and disembark the Palace of Wheels and then visit Agra Fort, which is a fine example of Mughal imperial fortifications and it served as the residence of the Emperors for three generations. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses splendid pavilions, gardens, mosques, and royal audience halls built with an aesthetic blend of Islamic and Hindu architecture that was signature to the Mughals. Post lunch, you will be visiting the symbol of love – Taj Mahal, this UNESCO World Heritage site (Closed on Fridays) is a marvel in marble and it is known for its exquisite symmetry. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and lovingly referred to as a “teardrop on the cheek of eternity”. Dinner will be served onboard Palace on Wheels.

Day 8 : Palace on Wheels at New Delhi

Breakfast is served on board Palace on wheels. Farewell from Palace on Wheels, Disembark the Train at Safdarjung Railway Station and continue with your further journey.
