Visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives can apply for a visa either in advance or upon arrival in Bhutan.

Indian nationals can apply for a permit but must hold an Indian passport or an Indian voter ID card. Minors under 18 from India can use a passport or birth certificate and must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Nationals from Switzerland and Thailand holding diplomatic or government-official passports can obtain a visa at their port of entry.

A visa allows you to stay in Bhutan for up to 90 days from the date of entry.

Can I extend my visa while I’m in Bhutan?  

Yes, you can extend your visa via the online visa application portal before the original visa or permit expires. Fees for processing the extension and the daily SDF for the extended stay will be payable via the same portal.

Can I use my international credit card to pay for my visa/SDF online?  

Yes, international credit cards can be used to pay for the visa and SDF online. However, it is advisable to notify your bank before making the transaction to avoid any payment issues.

Is travel insurance mandatory?  

No, mandatory travel insurance was lifted on April 23, 2024. However, it is strongly recommended to have travel insurance as a precaution.

Do I need to use a tour operator to book my travel?

If I want to drive my own car into Bhutan, how much does it cost?  

Driving your car into Bhutan costs Nu. 4,500 per car per day. A guide is also mandatory and will incur an additional charge. The vehicle must meet the requirements of Bhutan's Roads Safety and Transport Authority, and you must have a valid driver's license, insurance, pollution control documentation, an entry permit, and a vehicle in reasonable condition. A valid Indian driver's license is accepted for self-driving within Bhutan.

How do I get to Bhutan?  

Bhutan's international airport is located in Paro. Flights operated by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines connect Paro with destinations including Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Bodhgaya, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Guwahati, and Singapore. Private jets or charters can also fly into Bhutan with the relevant approvals.

Domestic airports are located in Yonphula (eastern Bhutan), Bumthang (central Bhutan), and Gelephu (south-central Bhutan).

Are face masks required to be worn in any places or at any times in Bhutan?  

Face masks are required only in hospitals and health centers. Guests may choose to wear face masks at their convenience. It is recommended to carry a face mask as a precaution.

What are the current COVID-19 regulations in Bhutan?  

As of September 23, 2022, there are no COVID-19 vaccination or quarantine requirements to enter Bhutan. Random COVID-19 testing is not conducted unless symptoms are present or a test is requested. If a guest tests positive for COVID-19 during their stay, they must wear a face mask and follow precautionary measures until they test negative.

How can I get to my hotel from the airport?  

You can take a taxi from the airport or arrange an airport transfer with your hotel or tour operator. No public transport is available at the airport.

What are my transport options for traveling around Bhutan?  

The most convenient way to travel is by hiring a vehicle and driver from a car rental company or a Bhutanese tour operator. Self-drive vehicle hire is not available. Your hotel or tour operator can arrange transportation for you. Domestic flights and helicopter services are also available for longer distances or special itineraries.

Can I go hiking or trekking independently, without a tour operator?  

All treks must be undertaken with an accredited tour operator or guide to ensure safety and logistical support.

Do I need a guide or a route permit to travel around Bhutan?  

A local guide is mandatory for any journey or trek beyond Thimphu and Paro, and for visitors entering Bhutan via land borders traveling beyond the border towns. Guides are not required for experiences such as dining out and shopping but are strongly recommended for visiting temples and local places of interest.
